Neuer Kunstverein Wien is pleased to present “Worship” (2016), a new video work produced by NathalieDjurberg (b. 1978) in collaboration with artist Hans Berg (b. 1978).
In the hands of Swedish artist Nathalie Djurberg, animation becomes a medium for transgressive andnightmarish allegories of desire and displeasure. Since 2001, Nathalie Djurberg has honed a distinctive style of filmmaking, using the pliability of clay to dramatise our most primal urges—jealousy, revenge, greed, submission, and gluttony. In her new video work Worship (2016), Nathalie takes her own personal fantasies as a starting point and investigates lust and desire. In her stop motion animation film sexuality is ever-present, victims and perpetrators switch roles, characters exploit and are exploited. Set to music and sound effects by her collaborator, Hans Berg, Djurberg’s video work plumbs the dark recesses of the mind, drawing sometimes disturbing connections between human psychology and animal behaviour. Their interdisciplinary collaborations have blurred the cinematic, the sculptural, and the performative in immersive environments that pair moving images and musical compositions with related set pieces.
Nathalie Djurberg (born in 1978 in Lysekil) began working with film while studying at Malmö Art Academy. She and the composer Hans Berg (born in 1978 in Rättvik) form an artist duo that is known for three dimensional sculptures, installations, and stage designs with surrealist influences. Their international exhibitions include the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow and Fondazione Prada in Milan. They have recently been featured in solo exhibitions at ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum in Denmark, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) in Melbourne, and Gió Marconi in Milan, as well as in group exhibitions such as The Great Mother at Fondazione Trussardi, AnIntroduction at Fondazione Prada and Arts and Foods at the Triennalle di Milano.
